Art creation…
…is an attempt at interrogating and presenting an artist’s own placement in time and space within the culture; more often than not we are creating within a hall of mirrors. Distortion plays tricks in many ways and affects our perceptions of form, experience and presence in a myriad of ways. We catch a glimpse of ourselves walking on the sidewalk in a window display, the depth and distance painting our portrait within the busy scene. We see an old photograph from youth or a selfie taken moments ago, suddenly we are rendered two dimensionally and held within the palm of our hand, time encapsulated and presented in an LCD frame. Arguably more disorienting is the daily encounter with ourselves in the mirror. This readymade self-portrait is rendered before our eyes and undergoes the distortion generated not from the medium but from within our internal perception. Our imagination blurs the edges or sharpens features and body parts. This is a medium of mind and we are ever beholden to the mental shutter imprinting an image, blending it with a million others constantly pulled from the archive of media and memory, generating an artificially conceived perception.
