This show is an exploration of the ways that our self perception gets distorted; by attention, insults or the self-awareness that comes from the mirrors we encounter, in our homes, our phones, through cameras and from television screens. We can be so preoccupied with finding the right angle and posture that fits into the lens of our minds eye that we can forget to just sit and let the image of ourselves develop. The darkroom was a space for silence, and concentration, the liquid chemicals slosh in the trays, and from below their surface an image arises, painted on the paper in gradients of black, gray and white. All the while the soft red light of the room calms, there is no phone, no screen to distract, just the process of printing, counting seconds and silently watching as the photograph begins to take shape.
